Who is C. Tangana?

Antón Álvarez Alfaro, known artistically as C. Tangana (Madrid, 1990), is a rapper, singer, and producer, one of the most influential figures on the Spanish urban music scene of the last two decades. He began his career within Madrid’s underground rap collective in the mid-2000s, in a circuit still far removed from commercial success.

His ability to constantly reinvent himself, changing sound and image with every stage of his career, has become one of his most talked-about trademarks among critics and audiences alike.

Career

After his beginnings in rap, in the mid-2010s he became one of the pioneering voices of Spanish-language trap, with tracks and collaborations that placed him at the center of the urban scene alongside Latin American artists. That period brought him mass popularity, especially among young audiences, but also generated critical divide over his provocative aesthetic.

The turning point came with “El madrileño” (2021), an album that largely abandoned trap to embrace boleros, rancheras, flamenco, and traditional Latin American sounds, with collaborations featuring figures such as Jorge Drexler, Niña Pastori, and Eliades Ochoa. The album was received as one of the most ambitious and highly praised works in Spanish-language music of recent years.

Notable discography

Besides “El madrileño,” his most notable works include the album “Ídolo” (2017) and numerous collaborations, such as “Antes de morirme” with Rosalía, one of the most listened-to Spanish urban tracks of his generation.

Legacy

C. Tangana has received several Latin Grammys and MTV awards, and is considered a key figure in connecting Spanish urban music with Ibero-American musical traditions. His career reflects an unusual artistic evolution, from neighborhood rap to a sonic proposal internationally recognized for its ambition and aesthetic care.
