El Guerrita

1895 – 1974

Who is El Guerrita?

Manuel González López, El Guerrita, was born in 1895 in Cartagena (Murcia). He began singing as almost a child, at barely twelve years old, at street fairs and taverns in his hometown, among them the Café el Tranvía, where he honed his craft before the public. His stage name comes, it is said, from the republican tone of some of his lyrics.

At just seventeen he had already formed his own company, an unusual step at that age that foreshadowed the ambition with which he approached his professional career.

Career

In 1926, at twenty-one, he made his debut in Madrid at the Teatro Fuencarral, and that same year he also performed at the Pavón. The following year he sang at the Novedades and the Monumental Cinema, almost always accompanied on guitar by Luis Yance. In 1928 he appeared at the Teatros Pardiñas and Avenida, and went on a tour organized by the impresario Vedrines together with Antonio Chacón, one of the most influential cantaores in the history of flamenco, which gives an idea of the level of the circles he was already moving in.

Between 1932 and 1935 he toured Spain sharing bills with Angelillo and La Niña de los Peines, and traveled to Argentina and Chile as part of Pepe Marchena’s revue “Pasan las Coplas,” one of the experiences that most helped project his name beyond Spain. In 1947 he toured the country again. He died in Barcelona in 1974.

Palos and discography

He specialized in the cantes native to the Spanish Levante: fandangos, milongas, tarantas, cartageneras and, above all, the minera, the palo with which he became especially identified. He left behind studio recordings and appeared in several films, leaving a documentary trail unusual for a cantaor of his generation.

Legacy

El Guerrita established himself as a reference of Levante cante, especially of the minera and cartageneras, thanks to a career that combined Madrid theaters, national tours and an international reach unusual for a cantaor of his time, alongside figures such as Pepe Marchena and Antonio Chacón.
