Diana Navarro
Who is Diana Navarro?
Diana Navarro (Málaga, April 21, 1978) is a singer raised in Málaga’s Huelin neighbourhood, a district with a strong fishing tradition. Her artistic career took off in 1994, when she won the Málaga Prize as champion of the San Roque National Copla Competition, a breakthrough that opened the door to her earliest recordings, including a tribute to Imperio Argentina and a collective album dedicated to new voices in Málaga copla.
Since then she has been known for a powerful voice and a saeta technique rooted firmly in the Málaga school, moving naturally between copla, flamenco and other influences such as Portuguese fado or Mediterranean folk music.
Career
Her debut album, “No te olvides de mí,” included the track “Sola,” the song that first brought her to wider attention. In September 2007 she released “24 rosas,” which sold more than 50,000 copies and went gold in just seven weeks. Two years later came “Camino verde,” on which she reinterpreted copla classics such as “Campanera,” “La bien pagá,” “Ojos verdes” and “Una paloma blanca”; it sold more than 80,000 copies and won an award for best Spanish-language song album.
Throughout her career she has worked with artists from very different backgrounds: Mexican songwriting legend Armando Manzanero, the Celtic music group Luar na Lubre, and performers such as Arcángel, Huecco, David de María, and even the rock band Mago de Oz, alongside duets with María Dolores Pradera, Pablo Alborán and Sergio Dalma. Her album “La esencia” revisited her biggest hits with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Aljarafe and also marked her acting debut in a short film.
Notable discography
Her best-remembered songs include “Sola,” “24 rosas,” “Camino verde,” and her renditions of classic coplas associated with names such as Concha Piquer, Miguel de Molina and Rocío Jurado, plus the duet “Te extraño” recorded with Armando Manzanero.
