Estopa

Formation and career
Estopa is made up of brothers David and Jose Muñoz, born in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona), who started playing together from a very young age while combining their jobs at a car factory with performances in neighborhood bars. Their style, a highly personal mix of Catalan rumba, urban rock, and direct lyrics about everyday neighborhood life, was completely novel within the Spanish music scene of the time.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 1999, was an immediate and largely unexpected commercial phenomenon, with massive sales that turned them overnight into one of Spain’s most popular bands, unusual for a sound so far removed from the usual commercial formulas.
Notable discography
Songs such as “Vino tinto,” “Como Camarón,” and “La raja de tu falda” became popular anthems almost from the moment of their release. Later albums such as “Destrangis” (2001) and “¿La calle es tuya?” (2003) confirmed that their initial success had not been a fluke, cementing a distinctive style that combined rumba, rock, and a very characteristic sense of humor.
Legacy
More than two decades after their debut, Estopa remains one of the Spanish pop-rock acts with the greatest drawing power, with tours that fill large venues and a very loyal fan base. The duo is credited with popularizing the fusion of rumba and rock on a massive scale, paving the way for other artists who would later explore similar blends within Spanish popular music.
