Who is Estrella Morente?

Estrella Morente (Granada, 1980) is a Spanish cantaora belonging to one of the great families of contemporary flamenco, daughter of cantaor Enrique Morente and dancer Aurora Carbonell. She grew up surrounded by artists and flamenco figures, which allowed her to train from childhood in a top-tier flamenco environment.

Before establishing her music career, she also had a brief foray into film, but soon focused all her efforts on singing, following the family path with her own highly personal style.

Career

Her debut album, “Mi cante y un poema” (2001), introduced her as one of the most promising young voices in Spanish flamenco. Later works such as “Calle del Aire” (2006) confirmed her ability to move between more orthodox flamenco and certain sonic explorations inherited from her father, without ever losing the depth of traditional cante.

Estrella Morente has performed on the most important flamenco stages in the world and has collaborated with filmmakers and musicians from other genres, expanding flamenco’s reach to audiences beyond regular enthusiasts.

Legacy

As heir to one of the most respected dynasties in contemporary flamenco, Estrella Morente has managed to carve out her own identity within cante, beyond simple family continuity. Her voice is today one of the most recognized and respected in current Spanish flamenco.
