José Juan Pantoja

1974 – present

Who is José Juan Pantoja?

José Juan Martínez Pantoja was born on 9 July 1974 in Málaga. Unlike many flamenco guitarists raised in the craft from the cradle, he is a non-gitano who trained through the academic route, studying solfège, harmony and classical guitar at the Conservatorio Superior de Málaga, without abandoning the flamenco calling that led him to debut as a soloist at just thirteen.

Career

That dual training, technical and flamenco, allowed him to make his way early on as a cante accompanist, a field in which he has worked alongside cantaores of the stature of Niña de la Puebla, Rafael Farina, Fosforito, Lebrijano, José Mercé, Rancapino, Paco Toronjo, Manuel Mairena, Curro Malena and Remedios Amaya. He also served as second guitar to Juan Habichuela, Enrique de Melchor and Niño de Pura, absorbing the craft of three of the great accompanists of his generation.

Since 2002 he has been Pasión Vega’s regular guitarist, touring with her continuously, and his career includes notable performances such as a solo recital in Paris in 1996, his presence at the 2000 Hannover Expo, a concert at the Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba that same year alongside Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, tours through Mexico and appearances at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla.

Style and discography

A self-declared admirer of Paco de Lucía, Gerardo Núñez and Vicente Amigo, his playing combines the technical rigor of the conservatory with the pulse of traditional accompaniment, a facet he has brought to both live performance and studio recordings, in which he has taken part as guitarist and arranger.

Legacy

His competition record backs up that dual strength: he won the prestigious international contest in Nîmes, France, three times, and picked up numerous national awards between 1991 and 2000, including several in young Andalusian flamenco competitions, cementing his place as one of the most sought-after accompanying guitarists of his generation.
