Who is La Húngara?

Sonia Priego, known by her stage name La Húngara, was born in Écija (Seville) in 1978. Before turning to music, she ran her own flamenco dance school in her hometown. Her stage name came about almost by chance: while she and producer Francisco Carmona were looking for a striking nickname, he overheard one of her students calling her “the Hungarian,” and they decided to keep it.

Career

After sending demos to several labels, JJ Records took a chance on her and released her debut album, “A Camarón,” in November 2001, featuring tracks such as “Yo soy canastera” and “Me duele el corazón.” Over the following years she refined her style with “Es un bandolero” (2003) and “Corazón flamenco” (2004), before “Amándote” (2005) established her nationally, with more than eighty performances in a single year and second place on the Radiolé chart. In 2006 she went gold with “Dibujando esperanzas,” which included her first music video, “Vete de mi vera.”

By then signed to Sony Music, she recorded “Mi sueño” (2009), featuring the single “Loca,” and “Guerrera” (2010). She also wrote “Yo soy español,” a tribute to the Spanish national football team after its 2010 World Cup win in South Africa. In 2011 she released “Vivo cantando,” her first covers album.

Notable discography

Her catalogue also includes “Ahora me toca a mí” (2007), with songs like “Me mata” and “Embustero,” and “Morir en tu veneno” (2008), which featured collaborations with Camela, Los Rebujitos and her own daughter Laura, among others. Her Christmas repertoire includes “My Best Christmas,” featuring traditional carols alongside rumbas such as “Aire que respiro.”
