Who is María del Monte?

María del Monte Tejado Algaba, known artistically as María del Monte, was born in Seville on April 26, 1963. Her career took off after she won the television contest “Gente joven” in 1982, which allowed her to release her first album. Her second, “Cántame sevillanas,” quickly became a hit and marked the start of a recording career that has racked up thirteen platinum records, with “Cántame Sevilla” as her best-known song.

Career

Besides her career as a singer, María del Monte has built a long career as a radio and television presenter. She started in radio in 1993 with “Vamos juntos” on Canal Sur Radio, and moved into television in 1995 with the weekly show “Quédate con la copla.” On TVE she presented programmes such as “La canción de mi querer” and “Esa copla me suena,” and contributed to shows like “Los debates de Hermida” on Antena 3 and “El show de Flo” on La Sexta. Since 2000 she has been a fixture at Canal Sur Televisión, where she has presented “Cántame,” “Contigo,” summer galas, Christmas specials and programmes dedicated to the Rocío pilgrimage, as well as fronting her own afternoon magazine show on the Andalusian channel for years.

Notable discography

Her repertoire revolves around sevillanas and copla, with “Cántame sevillanas” and “Cántame Sevilla” as her most recognised songs, tracks that established her as one of the leading voices of popular Andalusian music.
