Who was Nacha Pop?

Nacha Pop was a pop rock band formed in Madrid in 1977, led by singer and songwriter Antonio Vega, together with Nacho García Vega and other musicians who cycled through the lineup over the years. The band became one of the most representative acts of the Madrid Movida, with a luminous, melodic pop sound influenced by late-1960s and 1970s British pop.

Their name and image fit perfectly with the carefree, creative spirit of the early-1980s Madrid scene.

Career

The band rose to fame with its self-titled 1980 debut album, which included “Chica de ayer,” a song written by Antonio Vega that quickly became a generational anthem and, over time, one of the most covered and recognizable songs in Spanish pop. Following that success, Nacha Pop maintained an active recording career throughout the decade, establishing itself as one of the reference bands of Spanish pop.

The group disbanded in 1988. Antonio Vega went on to a successful solo career until his death in 2009, while “Chica de ayer” continued to be covered by artists of much later generations.

Notable discography

Besides “Chica de ayer,” notable songs include “Lucha de gigantes,” “Una décima de segundo,” and “Un pulso,” included on various albums released throughout the 1980s.

Legacy

Nacha Pop, and “Chica de ayer” in particular, are part of the collective imagination of the Madrid Movida and Spanish pop in general. The song has been covered by very diverse artists and remains one of the most emblematic pieces of that era.
