Who is Pasión Vega?

Ana María Vega, known artistically as Pasión Vega — a stage name given to her by producer Pedro Pérez Flores from Huelva — was born in Madrid on April 23, 1976, though from the age of three she was raised in the Nueva Málaga neighbourhood, where her family is from. Her musical beginnings came singing in her neighbourhood’s parish choir, and she soon began standing out in radio and television contests.

Career

In 1992, at just sixteen, she came third in a Cadena Ser contest, and the following year won the fourth edition of “Málaga canta,” organised by the same station, which allowed her to release her first vinyl single, “Estos detalles.” In 1994 she won the 10th Málaga Festival Competition with the song “Sueño malagueño,” and also triumphed on TVE’s television contest “Pasa la vida,” performing the copla “Romance de la otra.” In 1995 she took part in the Benidorm Festival with the song “En mi voz.”

Her first professional album, “Un toque de distinción,” came out in 1996, followed by “Con el alma en los labios” (1997) and “Corona de perlas” (2000), records with a strongly traditional copla flavour with which she gained popularity across Spain, all while never losing her connection to the Andalusian audience that had watched her artistic beginnings.

Notable discography

Throughout her career, Pasión Vega has broadened her range beyond copla, incorporating Argentine tango and jazz into her repertoire. She shared the stage with tenor José Manuel Zapata, from Granada, in a show of classic tangos — including songs such as “Cuesta abajo,” “Nostalgia” and “Media luz” — which made her the first popular-music artist to perform on the stage of the Teatro Real in Madrid. She has also recorded covers of Latin American classics by writers such as Violeta Parra, Alberto Cortez and José Alfredo Jiménez.

Legacy

With more than two decades of career, Pasión Vega has established herself as one of the most versatile voices in Spanish song, moving naturally between copla, melodic pop and tango.
