Patricia Vela

Copla · 1990 – present

Who is Patricia Vela?

Patricia Vela was born on August 3, 1975, in the Macarena neighborhood of Seville, though she grew up in San Juan de Aznalfarache, a town to which she has always felt especially attached. From a young age she balanced her studies with a musical calling, first stepping on stage in 1984. She became known in 1990 through the program “Las Coplas,” hosted by Carlos Herrera, and made her Madrid debut in 1991 at the Teatro Colón, sharing the bill with Paquita Rico in a series honoring Concha Piquer.

Career

In 1993 she recorded her debut album, “Por ti,” presented at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Seville to great acclaim from both audiences and critics. That recognition earned her a place in the “Sevilla y la Copla” series, organized by Seville’s city council, alongside historic figures such as Juanita Reina, Marifé de Triana, Gracia Montes, Maruja Díaz, Paquita Rico and Macarena del Río. Her second record, “En primavera,” followed in 1994, earning her the “Riá-Pitá” award from Radio Televisión Andaluza by popular vote.

Also recognized as a saeta singer, she has received honors including the Flecha de Oro (1988) and first prize for saetas from the COPE radio network (1989). She has hosted radio programs on stations such as Radio Intercontinental de España and Radio Sol de Andalucía, and has appeared on numerous television shows, including “Las Coplas” with Carlos Herrera, “Noches de Gala” on TVE, and “Cántame” on Canal Sur alongside María del Monte.

Discography and stage shows

Throughout her career she has brought shows such as “La copla en mi voz” (1995), “Fuego y pasión” (1998), “Soy de Sevilla” (2000) and “Con la copla por bandera” (2002) to the stage. Her father’s illness and subsequent death took her away from performing for a time; she returned in 2005 with the album “Seguiré.” In 2006 her song “La copla en mi voz” was included in the compilation “Las coplas de Carlos Herrera: 100 coplas para la historia,” released by EMI.
