Paula Gómez
Who is Paula Gómez?
Paula Gómez is a Spanish singer and songwriter born in Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz) in 1993. At sixteen she was already singing in the Big Band of the Cádiz Conservatory of Music, where she studied viola for eight years. Blues, both classic and modern, has been part of her life since childhood thanks to the influence of her father, Luis, a guitarist, and it is the genre that clearly shapes all of her compositions.
Career
A large part of her musical activity has taken place in Ireland, where she has worked with producer and musician Marcus McCarthy and keyboardist John Cullinane, a collaborator of figures such as Noel Redding (of The Jimi Hendrix Experience), Eric Bell (of Thin Lizzy) and Donovan, as well as with guitarist Stephen Housden of the Little River Band. She has performed at notable Irish venues such as Shanley’s, Cork’s Lee Delta Blues Club and De Barra’s Folk Club, and has taken part in festivals including the Waterfront Festival, the Cork Jazz Festival and the Guitar Festival of Clonakilty, sharing some concerts with musicians such as singer and trombonist Paddy Sherlock.
In Spain, in April 2010 she headlined a sold-out show at the Teatro Moderno in Chiclana before returning to Ireland to keep recording her compositions. Back in her hometown at the end of that summer, she performed “The Paula Gómez Show” as the closing act of Chiclana’s summer festivities, joined by Irish musicians such as Stephen Housden and John Cullinane. She has also collaborated with Spanish guitarist Raimundo Amador in Cádiz and was invited to record with Stephen Housden on one of his albums.
Notable discography
Her work has focused more on live performances and collaborations than on major record releases, with music videos shot at Castlefreke Studios in Clonakilty (Ireland) and her own weekly sessions at Irish venues, where she blends original compositions with her classical training and her declared passion for the blues.
