Who is Rosario Flores?

Rosario González Flores, known artistically as Rosario Flores, was born in Madrid on November 4, 1963. She is the daughter of Antonio González, “El Pescaílla,” and the celebrated Lola Flores, “La Faraona,” and the youngest sister of Antonio Flores and Lolita Flores. Although the youngest of the three siblings, she was the first to carve out her own independent artistic path, away from the family’s shadow.

Career

She made her debut as a singer in 1984 with the album “Vuela de noche,” but true success came in 1992 with “De ley,” a record featuring several songs written by her brother Antonio that launched her to popularity and sold around half a million copies. In 1996 she released “Mucho por vivir,” this time without Antonio’s involvement, following a very difficult period marked by the deaths of her mother and brother just fifteen days apart, in May 1995. That same year her daughter Lola was born, the result of her relationship with Carlos Orellana, an event the artist herself has described as a turning point in her life. In 1999 she released “Jugar a la locura,” an album for which she wrote ten of the eleven songs, blending her Roma roots with Anglo-Saxon and Latin sounds. In 2002 she starred opposite Argentine actor Darío Grandinetti in Pedro Almodóvar’s film “Talk to Her.”

Notable discography

In 2007 she released “Parte de mí,” a covers album featuring songs by her brother Antonio and her mother Lola Flores, alongside tracks by Nino Bravo and Cecilia, which won the Premio Ondas for album of the year. Her discography blends rumba, pop and flamenco, with collaborations throughout her career with artists such as Raimundo Amador, Kiko Veneno, Andrés Calamaro and Jorge Drexler.

Legacy

With more than three decades of career, Rosario Flores has established herself as one of the most personal voices in Spanish music, able to honour her family legacy while continuing to evolve artistically.
