Who is Sergio Dalma?

Sergio Dalma, the stage name of Josep Sergi Capdevila, is a Spanish singer and composer born in Sabadell (Barcelona) on September 28, 1964. A music lover since childhood, at fifteen he joined his first semi-professional band, Stils, performing concerts in Sabadell. He enrolled in Romance Philology and also studied French, Italian and English, but decided to devote himself entirely to music: he became the singer for the Pasarela orchestra, joined the group Canela, and worked in the choirs of the Teatre Arnau and Sala Scala in Barcelona.

Career

His appearance on the show “Gent d’aquí,” on TVE’s Catalan circuit, opened the door to a contract at Barcelona’s Sala Shadows. In 1987 he lent his voice to the album “El Profeta,” based on texts by Khalil Gibran, released by Producciones Pedralbes. That same year he signed with the Horus label, releasing his first official album, “Esa chica es mía” (1989), followed by “Sintiéndonos la piel” (1991). That year he represented Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Bailar pegados,” finishing fourth.

His career quickly expanded across Latin America, with major success in countries such as Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Venezuela; he performed twice at the Viña del Mar International Festival, in 1992 and 2002. In 1992 he released “Adivina,” which reached number one thanks to “Ave María,” alongside tracks like “Un anillo en la fuente,” “Tiburón” and Italian-language versions such as “Un’altra storia banale” and “Pregherò.” He then signed with Polygram Ibérica, releasing four albums with the label, and later with Universal, where he has released five more to date. Among his most popular songs are “Galilea,” “Mi historia entre tus dedos” (a cover of “La mia storia tra le dita,” by Gianluca Grignani), “Solo para ti” and “Déjame que te olvide.” His album “A buena hora” (2008) debuted straight at number one on the sales charts.

Notable discography

In 2010 he released “13,” a personal record with more modest commercial impact, followed by “Via Dalma,” a collection of covers of great Italian classics that he himself pitched to Universal for the Christmas market; it became the best-selling album in Spain that year, with over 200,000 copies sold. Throughout his career he has blended pop and balada with songs in Catalan, Galician and Italian on some of his compilations, such as “Lo mejor de Sergio Dalma” and “Todo lo que quieres.”
