Víctor Manuel

Who is Víctor Manuel?
Víctor Manuel San José Sánchez (Mieres, Asturias, September 24, 1947) is one of the foundational singer-songwriters of Spanish-language music, with a career beginning in the late 1960s that has always combined popular song, social commitment, and a strong connection to his Asturian roots.
He has been married since 1974 to fellow singer and actress Ana Belén, with whom he has collaborated on albums and tours throughout his career, while each has maintained their own independent artistic path.
Career
Víctor Manuel debuted in the late 1960s and soon established himself as one of the young voices of Spanish singer-songwriter music, with simple, direct lyrics about everyday life, the land, and personal relationships, steering away from the more combative rhetoric of other songwriters of the time. His close, emotional way of writing gave him very broad popularity with the public.
In 1982 he was one of the stars, together with Ana Belén, Joan Manuel Serrat, and Miguel Ríos, of the tour “El gusto es nuestro,” a historic meeting of four of the most important singer-songwriters in Spanish music at the time.
Notable discography
Among his most remembered songs are “Asturias,” “Sotanas de agua bendita,” “Que 20 años no es nada,” and “La quiero a morir,” along with numerous albums released over more than five decades of his career. His repertoire is marked by accessible melodies and emotionally charged lyrics.
Legacy
Víctor Manuel is considered one of the essential figures of Spanish singer-songwriter music, with an influence that extends to later generations of songwriters. His ability to combine melodic simplicity with emotional depth keeps him a living reference in Spanish-language music, decades after his first hits.
