Who is Farruquito?
Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya, known artistically as Farruquito, was born in Seville on 15 August 1982, into one of the most important Roma families in the history of flamenco dance. He is the son of cantaor Juan Fernández Flores “el Moreno” and bailaora Rosario Montoya Manzano “la Farruca”, and grandson of Antonio Montoya Flores, “Farruco”, one of the great bailaores of the 20th century.
Career
Farruquito made his international debut at just four years old, on Broadway, in the show “Flamenco Puro”, sharing the bill with some of the most legendary figures in flamenco, including members of his own family. That early immersion in the family art set him on a path devoted entirely to the purest form of dance, inheriting and developing the school created by his grandfather.
Over the years he has established himself as one of the leading figures in contemporary flamenco dance, preserving the deep, Roma style of the Farruco school while building his own career with international tours and shows.
Family legacy
Farruco took pride in marrying off his five daughters to Roma men in five memorable weddings; one of them, Rosario Montoya, married to cantaor Juan Fernández Flores, gave birth to Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya, who in time inherited his grandfather’s stage name and art. The Farruco/Montoya family remains today one of the great dynasties of flamenco dance, with several generations still active on stage.
